SAFETY CITY MISSION
STATEMENT
It is the MISSION of Safety City Society of
Lethbridge and Area
to develop and deliver personal safety education programs
for children.
Safety City Mandate - To reduce the number and severity of childhood
injuries.
Safety City Vision - "Instilling Lifelong Safety Attitudes Within
Children"
Injuries are the No. 1 cause of death and hospitalization for children
of Canada.
Safety City is
a community agency dedicated to serving the personal
safety needs of the children in the community and beyond.
The agency
acts as an educational resource to provide safety in
school classrooms as well as in Safety City's own
classrooms on site.
Until
recently, agencies like Alberta Transportation and the Lethbridge Police Service provided
traffic safety education in schools in the community. Due
to cutbacks and restructuring within these agencies, these
resources became unavailable to children. Safety
City works to fill that gap. As well, over the years, Safety City has
expanded it's programs to include a variety of other types of safety at
no charge to the students or the school! (Check out the link to our
programs!)
Safety City had been a dream of many individuals
in Lethbridge for over ten years. It was designed after the successful
model of the Safety City in Medicine Hat, Alberta.
In 1986, information regarding
the Medicine Hat project was gathered by local individuals who were
interested in the project. Since then, many visits and interviews have
been conducted to ensure the same success of our own Safety City.
In January
1993, the Safety City proposal was presented to the
Kiwanis Club of Lethbridge. It was met with approval and the Safety City
Project was taken on as a major project for the Kiwanis Club. A
volunteer board of directors involving
project partners including the Kiwanis Club, Lethbridge Police Service, Lethbridge Fire Department, Chinook Health Region, Alberta Motor Association, Alberta Transportation, CP Rail, Lafarge Construction and ATCO Gas was
formed. The society received official incorporation Oct. 2,
1995.
The Safety City Society of Lethbridge and Area currently offers safety
programs for children between the ages of five and twelve through visits
to local area elementary schools and during field trips to the Safety
City Training Facility. Over 7,000 student contacts are made with each
in-school program and over 2,000 children practice pedestrian and
bicycle safety at the Safety City Training Facility each year. These
interactive, comprehensive lessons have been proven to reduce the
numbers of preventable injuries and deaths in school-age children.
Services have always been provided at no charge to the schools or
students.
Safety City survives entirely on donations from the community and
receives no sustained funding from the City of Lethbridge, school boards
or government. Over the years, we’ve been able to operate through the
vision and generosity of our long term donors.
With an annual operating budget of less than $100,000, the board of
Safety
City is able to employ two instructors, operate an exceptional child
oriented training facility, and develop current and valued safety
curriculum for children and families. Safety topics that are presented
include; traffic, home, winter, motor vehicle, street-proofing,
bullying, internet, summer play, water, pedestrian, bike, internet, kids
on wheels, Halloween, motor vehicle safety and rollerblading.
On September
17, 2005,
Safety
City held its 3rd
Annual Open House and Family Fun Day where we presented our student
mayor, police chief and fire chief.
Each year we hope to continue to grow and develop. This can only be
achieved with a hand-on approach of Board Members, staff and the
surrounding community. We continue to look forward by expanding our
Board of Directors with fresh faces and new ideas as well as our donor
base in order to keep these valued safety programs in the schools.
Presentations of the student Mayor, Fire Chief and Police Chief are
